FAQ-tastic

Can I really get free stuff?
The short answer is: yes, you can get free stuff. Most of the freebies listed on Freetastic really are free. However, as the old saying goes, you can't get something for nothing.

The offers on this site are from companies trying to:
Get you to try something in the hopes that you'll like it and become a customer
Get your contact and demographic data for marketing purposes

The first purpose is pretty straightforward. You sign up and they send you something to try. Keep in mind that by signing up, you'll be providing demographic data that will probably be used to market to you in the future.

The second purpose is a little more tricky. There are thousands of companies who would like to have your contact and demographic data. Some want to use it for their own marketing purposes and others want to sell it. The end result is that you will end up being marketed to, either by the web, regular mail, or even personal contact.

Many off the offers are by companies who's sole purpose is to gather demographic data for themselves and others.

So to sum it up: to get your free stuff, you'll have to provide some personal information. Some require only a small amount like your address (so they know where to send it) and email. The amount of personal information required depends on the company making the free offer.

How can I protect my privacy?
1. Get a free email account. Get more than one! There are plenty of places that offer free email accounts; Google (GMail), Yahoo, and Hotmail are most well known. Use these free email accounts when applying for free stuff.

2. Change up your free email accounts when you start to get too much spam in them. Simple delete them and make more.

3. Get a P.O. Box at your local post office. Depending on the size, a P.O. box runs $8.00 to $20.00 or so every six months. When you apply for a freebie, give them your P.O. Box. Keep in mind that some companies won't send send to P.O. boxes. Read their terms! There are plenty that will, and this will more than pay for the cost of the box rental.

4. Get a free Voice Mail account. Search on Google for "Free Interent Voice Mail". There are planty out there. You can get a free personal phone number and pick up your messages right from your computer. If you decide to give out your real phone number when applying for offers, you run the risk of getting annoying telemarketing calls. This will happen even if you are already on the National Do Not Call List.

5. Some offers, especially free trials or buy on get one free, may requires you to enter a credit card. It's up to you to decideif an offer is worthwhile enough to give out your credit card info out. If you decide to do do, here are a few suggestions:
  • Always read the terms, consitions, and provacy policies.
  • Look for offers from companies you are familiar with.
  • Make sure the site is secure (look for https:// in the address bar).
  • Get a special card to use on line with a low limit, like $250. Use this card exclusively when signing up for free offers.
